All-Star Standings
Happily, no team won every game or lost every game.  Only one of the 24 teams had secured first place before the final league game leading up to the play-offs.  We expect the semi-play-offs to be very exciting.  Any of the teams could end up in the finals for the Scarborough Cup.

Nathanial from JFK's U6 All-Star division met and trained with Dwayne De Rosario of Toronto FC at camp last month.  Photo as featured in the Toronto Sun.

Picture Day Schedule
The schedule for Picture Day is in the Members Area  Picture Day is on Saturday, June 19 at Bendale BTI School.  Players in the U3 to U18 divisions for the summer league receive a free picture package.  Upgraded packages are available from the photographers.

Picture Day was a huge success.  Five photographers outside taking pictures also had their equipment set up inside with back drops and flash kits just in case the weather turned for the worst.  The weather stayed good, we had the most players ever attend Picture Day and we stayed on schedule all day.  Thank you members for a great day.  A make-up day will be announced soon for those that couldn't make it.

FIFA Declares Paradinha Illegal
The soccer world's governing body just declared the paradinha penalty kick illegal.  That is a maneuver popularized in Brazil in which the penalty kicker fakes the kick usually causing the goalkeeper to move to one side, then kicks the ball into the open side of the net, hence scoring.  Hold on a minute.  Now it's illegal?  JFK declared the paradinha illegal many years ago.  No feinting (faking) on a penalty kick we said.  It circumvents the purpose of the penalty.  To think JFK is a pioneer for international law making.  FIFA has stated that a yellow card will be rewarded to the paradinha player and the kick shall be retaken.

Important Notice about Assessments
Before the summer league season starts, JFK holds various assessment sessions.  These are practice and/or scrimmage games that specific players are invited to.  They are for new and past members which JFK would like to have a quick evaluation on their playing skills in order to help JFK plan evenly skilled teams hoping that no team during the summer will win or lose every game.  The assessments are by invitation only.  If you receive an invitation, please attend.  This is an important process in the many steps that JFK takes to balance teams before the season starts.  The assessments also help in determining that the players are registered to the correct program, such as the experienced skilled players should be in the All-Star house league and the beginner novice players should be in the Recreational house league.  Many players have assessment ratings from previous seasons like last winter or summer.  JFK may ask some of these players to attend to help provide a scale for comparison as well as to confirm and update current ratings.  Please cooperate with our assessments to insure everybody has a fun filled summer.

March Break Challenge Tournament
JFK hosted the Recreational tournament on March 14.  East Scarborough (West Hill location) won & tied a total of 8 games with a total of 101 goals.  West Scarborough (Agincourt & Thomson locations) won & tied a total of 9 games with a total of 103 goals.  That's the closest the tournament has ever been & the first time the West came out on top.  I guess we can say that's "how the West was won".  Everybody did a great job.

Michelle Obama Kicking it - U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama kicked soccer balls with youngsters to encourage them to get the recommended hour of daily exercise as she promoted her campaign against childhood obesity.  Mrs. Obama's participation in a soccer clinic in Washington coincided with the announcement of a new partnership...to provide children with...soccer clinics as part of the first lady's "Let's Move" anti-obesity effort.  Mrs. Obama said soccer gets people moving and their hearts beating.  Her 11-year-old daughter Malia plays soccer.  Let's Move!  Yes we can. .

Bend It Like Beckham - One of the most important skills to master in soccer is kicking the ball.  Accuracy is everything.  JFK is holding a free introductory clinic called “Bend it Kicking†to teach players the skill of kicking.  David Beckham is famous for his ability to accurately kick the ball.  JFK has brought in professional Score Academy Coach Tyler Smith, England's clone of Beckham (yes, he’s actually looks like him), to teach the art of kicking.  Players will learn fancy kicks like bending the ball (aka banana kick), bicycle kicks, volley and more.  This introductory clinic is free to JFK members (past & present) and friends.  That's right, invite your school mates, neighbors and relatives.  For ages 6 to 16 year old.  The clinic is 1.5 hours long.  We are also including a free introduction to Freestyling (the sport of ball juggling).  In order not to over crowd the session, each clinic has a capacity of 30 players.  Please RSVP the name of the player(s), age and which clinic number.  Those that RSVP will be given confirmation and guaranteed entry to the clinic.  Those that show up without RSVP confirmation will be first come first served based on availability.  Pictures and video from the 2009 Bend it Clinic.  Schedule for 2010 Winter Bend it Clinics:

Coach Tyler finishes in top row in the Coaching Association of Canada and the Campbell's Chunky Soup Most Valuable Coach of the Year Contest.  An astounding 2,000 plus fans and countless beautiful testimonials. Thank you members and friends for all your support.  Tyler is especially grateful.

Members and friends of JFK,
I would just like to take this time to express just how truly grateful i am for all the support shown and all the wonderful testimonials you have all written about me on the Campbell's website.  Coaching Soccer is an extremely rewarding job, every weekend i travel in the snow for an hour on the bus, from my home in North York, knowing that when i get there i am greeted by the warmest smiles from your children.  I look forward to coaching them, and am so incredibly proud of how far they have all come.  And I trust you can see an improvement in them also.  When i was a child, the greatest thing my parents could have done was to enroll me into a soccer program.  The friends I made, the lessons I learned, the social skills I developed, the sense of being part of a team (even though i am sure my mum's reasons were to tire me out so I would sleep when I got home.)  This being said, it is really a great thing that you have decided to enroll your children into soccer and you should be commended for that.  I have been Coaching now for 5 years in many different countries, but you and your children have really made Canada feel like home.  I look forward to seeing you all again in the Summer 2010.  Yours in Youth Soccer, Coach Tyler Smith.

Toronto FC came to Scarborough on Thursday for a free pub crawl party at Jack Astor's Restaurant.  Pictured here is Danny Dichio autographing for these JFK players (left to right are Justin G, Dichio, Ocean H & Daniel M).  There were 2 types of jerseys in the house - TFC and JFK.  Adrian Serioux, Gabe Gala and Amadou Sanyang were also among the guests.  Gabe received an honourary super-sized photo of his goal in the TFC vs Real Madrid game.  Adrian is a Scarborough native.

France vs Ireland Handball Goal 2009

It's sad it played out this way, but those are those rules.  If the referee doesn't call it, it's fair game.  See youtube for the handball goal that counted.  Thierry Henry handled the ball preventing it from going out of play and passed it for the winning goal.  It was even offside which didn't get called either.  He isn't the first to handball and get away with it and he won't be the last.  Diego Maradona did the same thing in the World Cup.  Check this top 5 handball goals video.  Just For Kicks in no way endorses handball goals or any type of cheating, but when it comes to handballs, the only thing that counts - is what the referee calls.  That call is final.  That's the law.  Can FIFA over-rule it?  Yes, but they never have.

Feeling sick?
If you are ill & more specifically, think you may have the flu?  Then, please do not go to soccer.
